Who AI assistants recommend for home services in Tampa, FL
We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode for home services in Tampa, FL recommendations 30 times. Here is what they looked for on a contractor’s Tampa page, from a small first sample.
The short answer
This is a small sample, and so far every Tampa question was about HVAC: ducts, mini-splits, air purifiers, ventilation and commercial repair. Assistants often could not tie a company to ZIP code 33604. They told customers to check the license and insurance, get the scope in writing and ask who pulls the permit.

The question underneath all of them
“Who in Tampa actually comes to 33604 for the job I need, and can I check them first?” Tampa’s small sample so far covers only HVAC installs and commercial repair, and assistants rarely confirmed a company served the customer’s ZIP code.
What your Tampa page has to explain
Tampa has only a small number of recorded answers so far, all from a few days in October, and none yet for plumbing, electrical or roofing. Treat this post as an early read. What it shows is how assistants handled a large city when the customer gave one ZIP code: they found many companies in the Tampa area and few that named that ZIP code.
Many companies the answers named described a wide service area, such as Hillsborough County or several counties at once. Assistants then told the customer to ask whether the company came to 33604. A listing for a company that mainly served St. Petersburg and Clearwater was flagged for the same reason. A Tampa page should name the Tampa ZIP codes and neighborhoods it serves, not only the county.
The rest of the advice would apply to any trade. Assistants told customers to ask for the Florida license number and proof of insurance, check the license on the DBPR lookup, and get a written estimate before work began. For commercial calls they asked about after-hours response and references from similar businesses. These belong on every trade’s Tampa page.
What the assistants looked for before recommending anyone
We read all 30 answers to see what the assistants looked for before naming a company for home services in Tampa, FL, what they told the customer to ask, and what they said they couldn’t find.
What the assistants told customers to ask
Most common first:
Can the customer check the license and insurance?
Answers told Tampa customers to check the contractor’s license on the Florida DBPR lookup and ask for proof of insurance. Some said they had not verified licenses themselves, so the customer should.
53% of the answers (16 of 30) brought this up.
Check the company's license on the Florida DBPR lookup, and ask for proof of insurance.
Is the scope of work in writing?
Assistants told customers to get a written scope before any install, covering what would be done, the permit, the warranty and the finish date. For commercial work, some asked for after-hours response times in writing too.
53% of the answers (16 of 30) brought this up.
Ask each company for a written scope covering duct sizing, insulation rating, sealing method, airflow/static-pressure testing, permit responsibility, warranty, and the exact completion date.
Is the permit in the quote?
Answers about installs told customers to ask whether the price includes the permit and who is responsible for it. They listed it alongside the license and insurance as things to settle before work starts.
40% of the answers (12 of 30) brought this up.
Ask for proof of insurance, and ask whether the quote includes the permit.
How fast does the company respond to a commercial call?
For commercial repair, assistants told customers to describe the equipment and ask for the earliest arrival, the after-hours fee and the emergency surcharge. Some suggested a maintenance agreement for priority service.
30% of the answers (9 of 30) brought this up.
Ask for the typical after-hours response time in writing.
Does the company name the customer’s ZIP code?
Questions here came from 33604, and assistants often found no company that named it. Some said they could not give a firm pick, and told the customer to ask each company about the ZIP code.
27% of the answers (8 of 30) brought this up.
I couldn't confirm that any of them serves 33604 specifically, except the first, so call each one to check.
What the assistants couldn’t find
In 11 of the 30 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 11 of its 12, ChatGPT in 0 of its 12 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 6. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:
- A phone number or other way to reach the company: 7 answers
- Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 3 answers
Compared with the larger towns: Claude said it couldn’t confirm something in 11 of its 12 answers about Tampa (92%), and couldn’t confirm that any company served Tampa in 3 (25%). In the eight largest towns we studied, those figures were 40% and 4%.
Tampa’s sample is small, so its gaps are an early signal. Assistants most often could not find a phone number they trusted, and could rarely confirm a company served the customer’s ZIP code. A Tampa page that lists its ZIP codes and one working number answers both, in any trade.
I also didn't find verified phone numbers, and I won't guess at them.
Where the assistants sent people
Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 24 ChatGPT and Claude answers about home services in Tampa, FL, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:
- A contractor’s own website: 100% (24 answers)
- A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 38% (9 answers)
- A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 21% (5 answers)
- An official license lookup: 4% (1 answer)
A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.
Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 6 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Your Tampa page checklist
Work through this list on your Tampa page. Each item answers something the assistants looked for above.
- Use “Tampa” in the page title, the main heading and the first paragraph.
- Show your Florida license number for each trade, with a link to the DBPR lookup, and name the insurance you carry.
- Say what a written estimate from you lists for common Tampa jobs, including the warranty and the expected finish date.
- Say which of your Tampa jobs need a permit, that you pull it, and whether the quote includes it.
- If you take commercial calls in Tampa, say how fast you respond, what after-hours work costs and whether a service agreement gets priority.
- List the Tampa ZIP codes you serve, so a customer in 33604 or nearby can see their address is covered.
- Say how soon you can usually come out in Tampa, and how far ahead larger jobs are booked.
- Put one working phone number on the Tampa page, matching your Google listing.
- Name Tampa and its ZIP codes you serve, such as 33602, 33604, 33609 and 33612, and say where your crews start from.
Going further: let assistants see real openings
For an urgent job, “open now” doesn’t answer the customer’s real question: can the right technician get to this address within the next few hours?
Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.
We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

Questions owners ask
Why does this Tampa post only cover HVAC?
So far the recorded Tampa answers are all HVAC questions, from duct installation to commercial repair. The advice that applies to any trade, such as naming your ZIP codes, showing the license and getting the scope in writing, still fits a plumbing, electrical or roofing page.
Should my Tampa page list ZIP codes or just say Hillsborough County?
List the ZIP codes. Answers often found companies that served Hillsborough County or the wider Tampa area, then told the customer to ask whether they came to 33604. Naming the ZIP codes you serve settles that on the page.
What should a Tampa contractor’s page say about commercial work?
For commercial repair, assistants told customers to ask about commercial experience, the earliest arrival, after-hours fees and references from similar businesses. If you take commercial calls in Tampa, say so and describe how you handle each of these.
Which AI assistants did you test?
ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Between October 9 and October 14, 2026, they answered 30 questions about home services in Tampa, FL: ChatGPT 12, Claude 12, Google AI Mode 6.
Will these changes guarantee a recommendation?
No. Nobody can promise that. These changes supply what the assistants were looking for in our research. Whether they move recommendations for your business is something to measure after they go live.
How we got these numbers
The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 30 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between October 9 and October 14, 2026. Every question named Tampa or one of its ZIP codes. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.
The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
