The questions covered 25 specific jobs. The most asked here, each with its own post:

The question underneath all of them

“Will a contractor from St. Pete or Tampa actually come to my Gulfport address?” Across HVAC, plumbing and electrical, assistants often found no contractor based in Gulfport and could not confirm who served 33707.

What your Gulfport page has to explain

The Gulfport questions covered HVAC, plumbing and electrical work. No roofing questions were asked there yet. In every trade the answers ran into the same wall. Assistants searched for Gulfport, found few contractors that named it, and listed companies from St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Clearwater or Tampa. Several described 33707 as the Gulfport, South Pasadena and west St. Pete area.

Because so few companies named Gulfport, assistants kept telling customers to ask before booking whether the company comes to this address, and whether it does this exact job. A plumber’s page might cover repairs but not repiping. An electrician’s page might cover panels but not smart home wiring. A Gulfport page should answer both in writing.

Permits came up in every trade. Answers about breaker and panel work, repiping, sump pumps and mini-splits told customers to ask who pulls the permit and whether the inspection is in the price. Some named the City of Gulfport or the City of St. Petersburg. A Gulfport page should say which jobs need a permit and who handles it.

What the assistants couldn’t find

In 42 of the 102 answers, the assistant said it couldn’t find or confirm something it needed about a company. By assistant: Claude in 42 of its 42, ChatGPT in 0 of its 42 and Google AI Mode in 0 of its 18. As we asked it, Claude usually says what it couldn’t confirm; ChatGPT and Google AI Mode seldom do, so these counts mostly show what Claude couldn’t find. Most often:

  • A phone number or other way to reach the company: 29 answers
  • Reviews it could check: 19 answers
  • Whether the company serves the customer’s town or ZIP code: 16 answers
  • When the company could do the work: 4 answers

Compared with the larger towns: Claude said it couldn’t confirm something in 42 of its 42 answers about Gulfport (100%), and couldn’t confirm that any company served Gulfport in 16 (38%). In the eight largest towns we studied, those figures were 40% and 4%.

In Gulfport, assistants often could not confirm that anyone served the town, and phone numbers were what they most often could not find. Every trade’s Gulfport page can answer both by naming Gulfport and 33707 and giving one working number.

Most of what came up was directory listings and company marketing pages, and I didn't find phone numbers I could confirm.

— Claude, asked “Looking for someone to do toilet installation in Gulfport, FL 33707 before the end of the month. Any recommendations?”, October 11, 2026

Where the assistants sent people

Each answer linked to the pages the assistant relied on. Of the 84 ChatGPT and Claude answers about home services in Gulfport, FL, this is how many linked at least once to each kind of site:

  • A contractor’s own website: 99% (83 answers)
  • A directory or review site such as Yelp, Angi or the BBB: 38% (32 answers)
  • A manufacturer or home-improvement guide: 18% (15 answers)
  • An official license lookup: 6% (5 answers)
  • A Google search or Maps page: 1% (1 answer)

A contractor’s own website was the page linked most often, so your site is usually what the customer is sent to read.

Google AI Mode works differently. In 83% of its 18 answers, the links opened Google’s own listing for a business rather than a website. There, your Google Business Profile is the page the customer sees, so it needs the same facts as your site.

Going further: let assistants see real openings

For an urgent job, “open now” doesn’t answer the customer’s real question: can the right technician get to this address within the next few hours?

Merchant Context builds custom integrations with scheduling software so customers and AI assistants can read your current availability. Where your system records the job type, service area, duration and crew capacity, the integration can show those details with each opening, so an assistant can match it to the request instead of guessing.

We scope each connection to the software and data you actually have. A displayed opening is not a confirmed booking: the customer still confirms through your normal booking process, and the information is only useful while it is fresh.

How we got these numbers

The questions, counts and quotes on this page come from the 102 answers ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode gave between October 9 and October 14, 2026. Every question named Gulfport or one of its ZIP codes. We collected them with software rather than the consumer apps, which can answer differently. We counted what each answer mentioned, what it said it couldn’t find and where it linked. Quotes never name a business.

The study figures come from an earlier set of assistant conversations in July and August 2026 across eight trades, coded for the reason each business was included or left out. Counts overlap and are never added together.
